Burnside Gorge Community Association Community Meeting about Street Housing - Feb 18th The Burnside Gorge Community Association has set a Community Meeting for Feb. 18 to allow residents to hear from City of Victoria and Cool Aid representatives about supportive housing proposals for the City of Victoria, including the proposed relocation of the Streetlink Emergency Shelter to the Burnside Gorge community. The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at the gym in the old Burnside Elementary School located at 3130 Jutland Road. The association recognizes that homelessness is a pressing region-wide issue and that all communities have a role to play in the solutions. Burnside Gorge would welcome permanent housing for the hard to house and looks forward to working in cooperation with the City of Victoria, Cool Aid and BC Housing towards this end. "We are having difficulty understanding why, with money being critically short for housing, that a large portion of the $34 million committed to Victoria from BC Housing is being used to relocate the Streetlink Shelter, which is about managing homelessness," says Paul Gerrard, President of the Burnside Gorge Community Association. "We believe that permanent housing is the more efficient and effective way to proceed." The recently released Mayor's Task Force on Breaking the Cycle of Mental Illness, Addictions and Homelessness - A Victoria Model advocates a "Housing First" Policy. The Calgary Plan to End Homelessness also advocates a "housing first" policy, which is about eliminating homelessness through permanent housing solutions. "Homelessness initiatives are very important and should be planned in consultation with communities," commented Kate Forster, BGCA Board of Director. "The Burnside Gorge Community Association has worked hard to provide a stable environment for residents including homeless families. We believe that permanent housing would not have the destabilizing effect on our community that we would face with an 80 plus bed transient shelter." Burnside Gorge looks forward to working with all parties to bring forth the best solution for the street community, the Burnside Gorge community, the City of Victoria, and the region.
