3.  BREAK'IN ICE Campus/Community Radio presents Ken Wu from WCWC - Nov 6th

This Tuesday on Break'in Ice, we'll interview Ken Wu, Executive Director for the WCWC Victoria.

We'll be discussing the BC Liberals just released 12-page forestry plan which highlights an increase in harvesting second-growth forests and harmonizing export taxes across B.C.

Media Release: Big Stumps, Coastal Forestry Plan

BC Liberal Government releases their Coastal Forest Action Plan: "Log the Old-Growth, Log the Second-Growth Even Faster, and Keep Raw Log Exports Ramped-Up"......m Wilderness Committee prepares for a possible re-escalation in the War in the Woods

"The Wilderness Committee is preparing to potentially dig-in for a major extended battle with the BC Liberal government, following the release of their Coastal Forest Action Plan yesterday. The new plan provides a framework for a more detailed Coastal Old-Growth Strategy, to be released at an unspecified later date. Unfortunately, it lacks any promises or indications that there will be any new protections for old-growth forests on Vancouver Island and in the Lower Mainland , but instead rationalizes their continued logging by falsely stating that "Old-growth forests are not disappearing" and brings in misleading figures largely derived from the northern rainforests."  Ken Wu, Campaign Director, Wilderness Committee

BACKGROUND ON BEAR MOUNTAIN INTERCHANGE:

"The only interchange approved at this time on Highway 1 is at Bear
Mountain." -- Ministry of Transportation official, August 16, 2007

Without public disclosure or consultation, the BC government appears
to be moving ahead with an ecologically harmful highway interchange on
the Trans-Canada Highway near Goldstream Provincial Park. Intense
lobbying by the Bear Mountain Development Group and City of Langford
are pushing this proposal, which will intensify the area's traffic
problems and disproportionally benefit the private Bear Mountain
interests. This company received Crown land and protected Forest
Reserve Land for their billion-dollar golf resort and subdivision on

Skirt Mountain, inflaming tensions with local First Nations.

Ecological features will be negatively impacted if the interchange
proceeds, including the 40-metre long Langford Lake Cave, mature
Douglas Fir, Arbutus, and Garry Oak forest, the Spencer Pond wetland,
and the Skirt Mountain slopes draining into salmon-bearing Goldstream
River and Florence Lake. Social concerns include encroachment on
nearby mobile home parks and the loss of affordable housing. Big
picture concerns include increased greenhouse gas emissions which
contributes to global warming.

Speak out against this plan before it is too late. Tell the BC
government that the Bear Mountain Interchange is bad for our region

and demand a sustainable transportation plan:

6.  Meet Adam Giambrone: A conversation about the power of young people - Nov 6th

Tuesday, November 6, 2007
5:00pm - 7:00pm
IQ Bistro (UVic's Grad Pub) Halpern Centre for Graduate Students

Adam Giambrone, city councillor and chair of the Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) will speak about the role that young people can play in politics and the world. This event takes place at the Grad Pub, so we encourage you to join us for some food and drink. They have some of the best food on campus.

Adam will share his experiences as the youngest president of any federal party (the NDP) in Canadian history, leading archaeological digs, being elected to city council and running one of the largest transit agencies in North America. As well, he'll remind us of the power that young people can wield, and how we can make a difference.
