In concert with the raging development occurring throughout Victoria and environs, the sub-geniuses serving North Saanich are O.K., in principle, with a scheme to dredge the Tsehum Inlet for an expansion of the already intrusive marina there. The Tsehum is familiar to islanders as the inter-tidal bay on your right as you  approach the Swartz Bay ferry terminal.

Beside being the first thing visitors departing the ferry for Victoria see, the inlet is an ecological crossroad vital to numerous species of marine and avian creatures. Derek Simon is a law student at the University of Victoria and member of the Environmental Law Centre. He?s worked with Governance Action in North Saanich, or GAINS, to mitigate development in the Tsehum Inlet to protect the Shoal Harbour Migratory Bird Sanctuary situated there from planned development.

Derek Simon in the first half.

And; the federal NDP will hold riding nomination votes for the Victoria seat soon to be vacated by outgoing Liberal, David Anderson this week. The former Environment Minister?s seat is one the NDP have high hopes for, but can an NDP member for Victoria press environmental concerns as effectively as the former government cabinet minister, and do they really care to?

David White is the former chair of the Green Party of B.C., and served as chair to both the B.C. Environmental Network and the Sierra Club of Victoria. David White and the where politics meets the environment in the second half.

And, Janine Bandcroft will be here at the bottom of the hour to bring us up to speed with all that?s good to do in and around Victoria this week. But first, Derek Simon and saving sanctuary.
