Three-Quarters of British Columbians Oppose Privatization of Drinking Water 71% Trust Their Community?s Local Government More Than the Private Sector to Provide Safe Drinking Water.

?On Vancouver Island, where there are serious threats to public water, this should be an issue in the November 19 municipal and regional district elections.?

The Ethics of a Buying Collective PDF Print E-mail

PEJ News - Julie Muir, Animal Rights Editor:  In a market environment where Nabisco Foods is owned by Philip Morris, where animals are confined in factory farms, and where women in Mexico are exposed to pesticides growing our imported tomatoes, it is an interesting position to try to be an "ethical" consumer in North America.  The Ethics Buying Collective is one initiative in Victoria which is making a concerted effort to offer foods which do least harm to the environment, humans and other animals.  Founded less than a year ago by three people who shared a vision, the EBC has 80 members, 40 regular customers, and is gradually strategizing its growth into a storefront location.  On a rainy Sunday, I had a chance to talk to Heather Steel, the EBC coordinator, about the vision of the collective.

Faith, Hope, and Charity - alive and well at St. Ann's Tent City

PEJ News - Janine Bandcroft - The 'Big One' could hit anytime - earthquake, flood, snowstorm, downsizing, outsourcing, lock-out, medical or dental emergency, lack of public resources, depression brought about by pondering the endless possibilities of the former - are you prepared?

On the morning of September 26th I left my warm Oak Bay bed (where I was house-minding for a friend, dreaming of refusing to sign a contract with Hanes after learning they were involved with mining) and cycled downtown in the chilly morning air to St. Ann's Academy.  I've been interested in the Right to Sleep campaign (which is more of a spontaneous movement bred of necessity than an orchestrated campaign) since I met David Arthur Johnston over a year ago.  David has been arrested many times (for details, and information about the new documentary, visit loveandfearlessness.com) because he insists on sleeping at St. Ann's Academy - a publically owned space, managed by the Provincial Capital Commission.  David's currently staying away from St. Ann's, while the courts decide what to do with him, but his 'campaign' has been taken up by a number of interesting street folk.

Meet PEJ News Editors at Swans in Victoria: August 4, 7:30 to 9:30 pm

PEJ News -
In July, PEJ News hosted over 100,000 visitors on the web and delivered email subscribers more than 100,000 additional articles. Ever wonder who brings you and 100,000 others this entirely different perspective on the news each and every day? Are PEJ News volunteers interesting in person? Are they computer geeks? What motivates them? What do they think will happen next politically? It is my great pleasure to invite Peace, Earth & Justice News readers to celebrate this great success and meet the PEJ Editors and Contributors for an enjoyable social evening.

Over 400 Victorians receive PEJ News to their email box daily and there are another 1,000 email subscribers from around the world. I hope many of our local readers and perhaps some from out of town will join us to celebrate 18 months on the web. Please join us at Swans Hotel (Wharf @ Pandora in Victoria, Canada), on Thursday, August 4 @ 7:30 to 9:30 pm in the Collard Room.

VCE and Lowe Riding "Back" Together?

PEJ News - When is Harm Reduction not harm reduction and do Victoria politicians support a safe injection site? In Victoria, Harm Reduction is what you want it to be. A few days ago the City (Mayor Alan Lowe) and VIHA hosted a public meeting (July 19) and handed out material that posed this question, "What is harm reduction?"

The Art of Compassion: Vegan Outreach at the Moss Street Paint-In

PEJ News - Julie Muir, Animal Rights Editor: This Saturday, March 16, from the art gallery to the beach in Victoria BC, artists will open their easels and their hearts to present their passion to the public. The yearly Moss Street Paint-In provides an open-air venue for people to watch as artists work, and to be inspired by their creativity. There will be others there sharing their passion with the public as well: as animal rights advocates. John Bowers for one will be wearing his heart on his sleeve as he dons a pink pig costume to hand out leaflets about factory farming.
