Dictating the News: Woes of a One-Paper Town

PEJ News - C. L. Cook - Subscribers to the Times Colonist newspaper, Victoria's sole daily, and representative of the Toronto-based CanWest Global media monolith, were treated Friday, June 9, 2006 to a close-up front page image of the face of a corpse. The image is of a man, clearly beaten, eyes closed, dead. The dead man's face is artfully framed between 'Old Glory,' in its star-spangled splendour, and a photo of two American soldiers in battle fatigues.

Street Newz to Street Vending

PEJ News
- Congratulations to Street Newz for instilling hope in the hapless. The previous street newspaper, the not too lamented Red Zone, was mired in an abyss of pointless negativity, infighting, and all out corruption.

Your goal of instilling a sense of purpose in its vendors and giving them a much needed additional income is highly laudable. The obvious next step might be to challenge the shopkeeper monopoly on the sale of disposable items through the legalization of street vending. Visitors of Central America are, of course, aware of the existence of street vendors. These individuals can range from strolling vendors to vendors of products with blankets on which they display their items for sale to vendors in designated market areas. You get the general idea, of course.

Homeless Week Jan 30 - Feb 5: The Many Faces of Homelessness

Homeless FamilyVictoria Homelessness Steering Committee
- "Victoria's first homeless count was held last winter during one of the coldest nights of the year when temperatures reached -10 degrees Celsius," said Kathy Stinson, Executive Director of Victoria Cool Aid Society. "Two hundred volunteers counted over 700 homeless that night, including families, seniors and children. One hundred and sixty-eight of them were sleeping outside in the freezing weather. Unfortunately, the number of homeless in Victoria continues to grow - we are turning people away every night at Streetlink and Sandy Merriman emergency shelters."

This year, the municipalities of Victoria, Saanich, Esquimalt, Central Saanich, Colwood, Sidney, View Royal, Sooke and the Highlands have proclaimed "Homeless Week"; an opportunity for everyone to consider the many faces of the homeless in our communities.

"Homeless Week is about awareness and public education," said City of Victoria Mayor and CRD Chair Alan Lowe. "The week will help us see the many diverse faces of the homeless in our community and encourage us to do more to provide decent housing and services to those most in need.  These include families, seniors, men, women, and children, the employed, and unemployed."

Your Space & Technology Vote goes to the NDP

PEJ News - Only getting to cast one vote in the Canadian Federal Election in Victoria BC on January 23rd, 2006 my vote goes to Denise Savoie of the New Democratic Party.

What can the topics of complex mega-dollar industrial enterprise like satellite, space exploration, nanotechnology, and electronic privacy invasion have to do with the electoral choices of a voter with interest in Peace, Earth, and Social Justice?

Why I Am Voting NDP

PEJ News
- Caspar Davis - I will not vote for the "Conservatives" for many reasons. Chief amongst them is that the Conservatives would drag Canada back to 19th century laissez faire, complete with unbounded faith in material progress (including the idea that the sole value of nature is for economic exploitation), the belief that poverty and wealth are self evident signs respectively of vice and virtue, and the notion that the white man's burden is to bring the gospel of progress to the natives. They are also unabashed champions of "deep integration" into Bush's America, including his aggressive wars and the weaponization of space.

Enough to Make You Gag: The Sick-Making George W. Bush

Empire Burlesque - Chris Floyd - If George W. Bush shows no qualms about violating the 217-year-old U.S. Constitution or the 791-year-old Magna Carta, why should we be surprised to find that he is now violating the 2,400-year-old Hippocratic Oath? And yet this week's revelation of how American doctors are force-feeding captives on hunger strike in Bush's concentration camp at Guantanamo Bay still has the power to shock and sicken ? not just from the savage act itself, but also for the wider moral defeat it represents: another open embrace of raw brutality, another step in America's accelerating plunge into vicious despotism.

Getting the Straight Poop: Times-Colonist Misleads Readers

PEJ News - Jack Etkin - Sewage treatment is a big issue in the upcoming city elections and Victoria's daily newspaper is doing a good job of misinforming the citizenry.  In a democracy, people need full and honest information in order to be able to make intelligent decisions on our own behalf.  That is why the constant one-sided and incorrect information provided by the TC and other Corporate media on so many issues is both dangerous - and an affront to democracy.
