Tent Village in Ellice Park

PEJ News - Open Letter to Denise Savoie -
Denise - i dunno how you're feeling about the tent city/dignity village idea, but i wake up in the night wishing (i'd pray if i believed it'd do any good) that they'd just open ellice park for a tent city, just until whenever it is they're going to break ground. i can't imagine what it's like to try and find a safe hiding place to pitch a tent in the snow (or rain) and cold, then to have to take it down first thing in the morning again and pack it around all day.  of course we need affordable housing, but we've been listening to that mantra for years, and until it happens tent cities are a solution. people have used snow as insulation against cold for centuries. people are dying, maybe again tonight.  a dignity village will save lives and spare our over-burdened health care system.  for some reason dean doesn't get that and i know some long time ndp supporters who are very upset that he campaigned on a platform that's so staunchly opposed to the tent city solution.

Stop Cridge Park Development

PEJ News - The Cridge Park area is under consideration by the city to be redeveloped into high density commercial, trucking and bus terminal. This area is at the south end of Blanshard St.  I am sure that environmentalists are cringing over the use of a park for a transit stop and high intensity development.  If you want to help get in touch with the Cridge Park Rescue Group

We just got word that PM Stephen Harper will be in Victoria on Monday to open the BC Day festivities. He will be at the Legislature at noon.

So - I encourage everyone to come out at 11:30 am to greet him. Bring signs that will let him know about your favourite federal political issues. We need to let him know how we feel about how he and his party are governing our country.

Fernwood Community Association Eviction Backgrounder

PEJ News - For over 25 years the Fernwood Community Association has been a good steward of the historic building at 1921 Fernwood Road.

In 1979, community members organized the purchase of the building.  The City of Victoria contributed 25% of the purchase price.  Since then, the City, the FCA other community groups have worked together to ensure that our historic building is maintained at no cost to Victoria taxpayers.

CARTS Street Outreach Fundraiser

PEJ News - Kathy Kossen -
CARTS has recently enlisted the assistance of "GiveMeaning" which is a donation site for folks that wish to make donations to help others, mostly small charitable groups, like CARTS.  We are now entering year five out on the streets of Victoria - what a fantastic time we have had, having the privilege of looking after so many many people.  We are now helping approximately 175 - 200 people every Friday night, a need that seems to get bigger as time goes by.
