PEJ News - PETA - Ingrid E. Newkirk -
When President-elect Barack Obama was born, numerous states would have prohibited his black Kenyan father from marrying his white Kansan mother. The Voting Rights Act was still a few years away, and the Supreme Court

The Risk Factor: Obama vs McCain

Jazzman Chronicles - Jack Random - Just when you think the American people are awakening to the forces that have battered them like the floodwaters of Katrina in the lower ninth ward for the last seven and half years, along comes a survey concluding that a vast majority considers Senator Barack Obama the riskier of the two major party candidates vying for the presidency.

Set aside whatever misgivings you may have concerning the Senator from Illinois, this is the judgment of a paranoid schizophrenic prescribing his own medicines.  Like any candidate, while Obama may present a certain measure of risk, Senator John McCain is a certain catastrophe.

Five Years Later, Direct Action to Stop the War Reemerges

Pej News - Scott Campbell - After more than a decade of military aggression and genocidal sanctions, on March 19, 2003, the United States launched it's most recent attack against the people of Iraq. The following day, the people of the world took to the streets in protest. More than 20,000 turned out in San Francisco to take part in coordinated, nonviolent direct actions which shut down the Financial District of the city. Additional targets included military recruitment centers, the Bay Bridge and the Federal Building. Actions continued on March 21 and in the end more than 2,200 people were arrested with virtually all charges being dropped.

These tactically successful actions were organized by Direct Action to Stop the War (DASW), a grouping of activists and affinity groups who functioned and made decisions in a decentralized, non-hierarchical, consensus-based manner. First coming together in late 2002, DASW organized in the months leading up to the invasion of Iraq planning actions for "Day X" when the war started. DASW lasted until 2004 and mobilized for direct actions locally against war profiteers such as Bechtel, Chevron and Lockheed Martin, and nationally, such as at the Miami meeting of the Free Trade Area of the Americas in 2003 and the 2004 Republican National Convention in New York City.

Action: First Vote to End the War to Take Place Within Hours

Act for Change
- In just a few hours, the House is going to have an up or down vote on bringing the troops home in 2007. Rep. Jim McGovern of Massachusetts has proposed H.R. 2237, which mandates the redeployment of American military forces and defense contractors out of Iraq, beginning within 90 days of the passage of the bill.

Please call either office and ask your legislator to vote for Jim McGovern's HR 2237 to End the War! (if you have time, see the petition at Working Assets as below--but if you can, call!)

Criminals Control the Executive Branch

ICH
 - Paul Craig Roberts - February 9, 2007 - Gentle reader, you are probably unaware of former National Security Adviser Zbigniew Brzezinski's damning indictment of the Bush Regime in his testimony before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on February 1, 2007, as the United States no longer has a media - only a government propaganda ministry.

From the Donkey's Mouth: Exclusive Post AIPAC Interview with John Edwards

The American Prospect - Ezra Klein - "The political elite have begun to leave him, the religious leaders have begun to leave him, the people aren?t happy with him, for at least two reasons: one, they don?t like his sort of bellicose rhetoric, and second, he was elected on a platform of economic reform and helping the poor and the middle class, and he hasn?t done anything. In fact, while he was traveling, the leaders of the legislature sent him a letter saying, ?when are you gonna pay attention to the economic problems of our country.? So, I think we have an opportunity here that we need to be taking advantage of."  - Democratic Presidential Candidate John Edwards on Iranian President Ahmadinejad.

Testimony: Brzezinski Charges Bush Regime Plotting for War in Iran

PEJ News - Senate Foreign Relations Committee - A plausible scenario for a military collision with Iran involves Iraqi failure to meet the benchmarks; followed by accusations of Iranian responsibility for the failure; then by some provocation in Iraq or a terrorist act in the U.S. blamed on Iran; culminating in a ?defensive? U.S. military action against Iran that plunges a lonely America into a spreading and deepening quagmire eventually ranging across Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan, and Pakistan.
