Getting Past Terrorism in America

AG - Rami G. Khouri - The good news in the United States is that more thoughtful individuals and institutions have started to generate some high quality, accurate research and analysis about terror groups. I was fortunate to absorb some of this at a two-day conference last week at the Fares Center for Eastern Mediterranean Studies at Tufts University. Excellent papers were presented by a range of mostly American scholars and analysts, including Robert Pape, Peter Bergen, Fawaz Gerges, Steve Simon, Mia Bloom, Ian Lustick, Richard Shultz, John Esposito, Ayesha Jalal, Sumantra Bose, As?ad Abukhalil, Hisham Melhem, and others. I mention many of the authors simply to highlight the availability in the United States of so many good, honest scholars and journalists who grapple with this important issue.

The Empire's Guard: Praetorians and Otherwise

ICH
- Charles Sullivan - There is no escaping the fact that the U.S. is an imperialist nation conceived in genocide and racism that has continued through the ages, and worsened with the rise of modern technology and weaponry. With the advent of smart bombs came stupid and immoral leaders. Our litany of crimes against earth and humanity are concealed under layers of moral language, but the actual deeds belie the intent behind what is being done in our name. Ignorance, however, does not absolve anyone from culpability.

Less Proves More War for Democrats

Atlantic Free Press
- Dave Lindorff - And what are the Democrats in Congress going to do? Devoid of any principles, their chance to demand an end to reckless imperialist military adventures squandered, they are likely to fall in line and vote to fund both an escalation of the Iraq War and an expansion of the military.

War is US: Weapons Provider to the World

Agence Global
- Bradford Plumer - No one can accuse the U.S. defense industry of lacking audacity. Despite receiving vast sums of money from the Pentagon each year, and having much of Congress in their back pocket, arms manufacturers have been holding conference after conference of late complaining that big government is keeping them down.

Stalled Progressive: Bush Crows Numbers

JMC
- Jack Random - Despite the explosion of violence in Iraq, the ongoing disaster in Afghanistan, the revelations of sanctioned torture and illegal rendition, the spectacle of Republican divisions in the congressional ranks, a Senatorial affirmation of the White House deceptions, and an intelligence community reminder of the obvious, the antiwar movement has little to cheer about these days.

Bush - Blair - Olmert: Casting Wider the Dragon's Teeth

AG
- Rami G. Khouri - A new report issued Thursday shows that 170 Palestinians were killed in the occupied Gaza Strip in the latest Israeli military offensive between June 27 and August 8, with 151 individuals killed in July alone. This is the single largest monthly death toll in the occupied Gaza Strip since October 2004, when 166 Palestinians were killed.

A Bitter Farewell to Beirut - Getting Out

David Ball
- As I wait to evacuate with the Canadians here, I have experienced almost every imaginable emotion from rage to grief to fear (and occasionally delirious joy) as I wait in dread for news from Lebanese and Palestinian friends who are scared and feel they are 'counting hour-by-hour, day-by-day.'

Did Hezbullah Capture the IDF Soldiers in Israel, or in Lebanon?

Ingmar Lee ~
Apparently, the Israeli soldiers currently held by Hezbullah were actually captured inside Lebanon, as opposed to the prevalent line that Hezbullah invaded Israel to capture them.

Inform Our Troops!

- Mickey Z - Let's say you're opposed to animal experimentation. Would you be amenable to "supporting" the actual scientists performing lab experiments? Surely they are "just doing their job" and "following orders" as much as any U.S. Marine in Iraq. Or what if you're an activist fighting to end exploitative labor practices? Is it acceptable to hate the CEOs of Nike and The Gap but still hang yellow ribbons for the men and women who handle day-to-day operations of a sweatshop in, say, Vietnam?

Erasing Palestine

AG
- Wendy Kristianasen - "I've never seen a government put under such pressure: we're being squeezed out of existence. There's no time to breathe or think," said Dr. Aziz Dwaik in Ramallah. He is the speaker of the Palestinian Legislative Council (PLC) and knows the West well, having two MAs and a Ph.D. from universities in the United States. He continued: "If the West wants Hamas to fail, OK. But it won't serve international peace and prosperity because it risks radicalising the Palestinians. The region will pay the price."
