On this day, like any other,

soldiers are killing and dying,

arms merchants are selling their wares,

missiles are aimed at your heart,

and peace is a distant dream.

Terror and Teargas on the Streets of Bahrain
The Revolution Will Not Be Televised (in the U.S. at Least)

By Jen Marlowe https://www.tomdispatch.com/blog/175594/

Jihan Kazerooni and I drove past scores of armed riot police on Budaiya highway as her iPhone buzzed non-stop: phone calls, Skype calls and, incessantly, Twitter. I had wondered what the phrase “Twitter revolution” really meant when I heard it used in connection with Iran in 2009 and Egypt in 2011. Here, in the small Gulf Kingdom of Bahrain, I was beginning to grasp the concept.

Kudankulam anti-nuclear protesters form human chain off nearby Indinthakarai coast

KUDANKULAM: Stepping up their protest against the atomic power plant here, anti-nuclear activists today stood in sea waters forming a human chain off nearby Indinthakarai coast.

Taking a leaf from 'Jal Satyagraha' activists in Madhya Pradesh, the activists of People's Movement Against Nuclear Energy (PMANE) stood in the waters close to the shores in a new turn to their year-long protests.

Canada Strengthens Ties with Saudi Arabia

Closing ranks with the US and Israel, Canada has denounced Iran as the biggest threat to global security and said it will expel all of the Islamic Republic’s diplomats from its territory by September 12th.

“Canada views the government of Iran as the most significant threat to global peace and security in the world today,” Foreign Minister John Baird said in a statement.

“Under the circumstances, Canada can no longer maintain a diplomatic presence in Iran … Diplomatic relations between Canada and Iran have been suspended,” he added.

Last month, competing interests prevented agreement on a much-needed treaty that would have reduced the appalling human cost of the poorly regulated international arms trade. Meanwhile, nuclear disarmament efforts remain stalled, despite strong and growing global popular sentiment in support of this cause.

Informers have by now become our first line of defense in our battles with the evildoers, the go-to guys in the never-ending domestic war on terror. They regularly do the dirty work -- suggesting and encouraging the plots, laboring as bag men to move the money, fashioning the bombs, and eliciting the flamboyant dialogue, even while following the scripts of their handlers to the letter.  They have attended to all the little details that make for the successful and now familiar arrests, criminal complaints, trials, and (for the most part) convictions in the ever-distracting war against... what? Al-Qaeda? Terror? Muslims? The inept? The poor?

Obama's New Iran Sanctions: An Act of War

Shamus Cooke -
When the UN refused to agree to the severe sanctions that the U.S. wanted, Obama responded with typical Bush flair and went solo. The new U.S. sanctions against Iran — signed into law by Obama on July 1st — are an unmistakable act of war.

The Land Where Theories of Warfare Go to Die

Obama, Petraeus, and the Cult of COIN in Afghanistan https://www.tomdispatch.com/archive/175266/
By Robert Dreyfuss

Less than a year ago, General David Petraeus saluted smartly and pledged his loyal support for President Obama’s decision to start withdrawing U.S. forces from Afghanistan in July 2011. In December, when Obama decided (for the second time in 2009) to add tens of thousands of additional American forces to the war, he also slapped an 18-month deadline on the military to turn the situation around and begin handing security over to the bedraggled Afghan National Army and police. Speaking to the nation from West Point, Obama said that he’d ordered American forces to start withdrawing from Afghanistan at that time.

Imminent Canada-India
nuclear pact heightens tensions

by Graeme Smith The Globe and Mail

Impending deal could be worth billions for
Canadian industry, but it has already
become a source of concern in Pakistan

An imminent deal that would open the door for Canadian exports of
uranium to India, could add to nuclear tensions in South Asia, some
experts say.

The impending agreement made front-page news this week in India,
amid speculation Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s visit to Canada
for the G20 summit will allow him to sign a long-awaited nuclear

Peace Groups Slam High Court Ruling on "Terror Support"
William Fisher

NEW YORK, Jun 22 (IPS) - In the wake of Monday's Supreme Court decision upholding a law making it a crime to provide any "material support" to an organisation designated as a "terrorist" by the U.S. government, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter charged that the law "actually threatens our work and the work of many other peacemaking organisations that must interact directly with groups that have engaged in violence".
