Clue to sudden climate change found in Arctic: Climate could change extremely rapidly with very dramatic effects

June 28, 2005 - PhysOrg.com

The sudden deep freeze of the northern hemisphere that occurred 13,000 years ago has been traced to events originating in northern Canada, according to University of Toronto research. The findings could shed light on the future of climate change due to greenhouse gases.

The study, published in the June 2 issue of Nature, pinpoints the exact location where freshwater generated by the melting of the massive Canada-wide Laurentide ice sheet entered the global ocean and caused the Younger Dryas cold reversal, a frigid period where the planet temporarily plunged into ice age conditions. Contrary to previous thinking, the study shows that this meltwater entered the Arctic Ocean rather than the Atlantic and the point of entry was through the MacKenzie River. As the freshwater - lighter due to its lack of salt content - flowed into the ocean it was transported across the pole into the North Atlantic where it shut down the process whereby heavy surface water sinks into the abyss and leads to a warming of the northern hemisphere.

Quotes from "The Ice Is Melting" by Chief Oren Lyons

Schumacher Society: What I say to you today is that the ice is melting in the North as we speak, trees are tipping, the roads are buckling, buildings are falling in. From what? From the permafrost melting. Perma. Permanent frost. No, not so permanent. It's melting right now.

Whatever happens to us will not have any impact on the world. In time, the world will regenerate. It will come back green, and the waters will be clean again. It's just that there won't be any people here. That's all. We're not needed. We're parasites. We don't help the Earth, we take. So if all the people disappear, then the Earth is going to regenerate because there'll be peace here again.

Hybrids Take New York

The Nation - Katrina vanden Heuvel - Frustrated by exorbitant gas prices, Kwame Corsi, a taxi driver from the Bronx, had been waiting years for the chance to drive a hybrid car. In New York, where 93 percent of the city's cabs are Crown Victorias (large Ford models that guzzle a gallon every twelve miles), drivers like Corsi often pay up to $100 dollars a day on fuel. Up until last week, New York City's Taxi and Limousine Commission had refused to grant medallions for hybrid taxis.

A Future Less Tense: An Essay In Wishful Thinking

F.H. Knelman, Ph.D.:
The year was 2055. The world was at last at peace. The oil age had ended, but not without huge social costs. But the costs were so great that the net benefit might be questioned. While a nuclear war had been averted, the global environmental disaster that had occurred was, if anything, more costly. The source was global warming, fueled by greenhouse gases, just as the vast majority of climate experts had predicted thirty years earlier.

1.Message from Tre ~

Hello to everyone out there! In case you haven’t heard, my extradition hearing has been progressing as well as can be expected. My deepest gratitude and love to all those who bless me with their smiling, shining faces during the extradition hearings. And to all of you who have been keeping me in your thoughts and prayers during these times…. A huge thanks to you as well. I send huge props to Tim Russell, my lawyer who delivered a compelling and solid argument opposing my extradition. I feel the judge was fair in her receiving the submissions. She could have been hostile or unwilling to hear some of Tim’s presentation, yet she listened, took notes and allowed him to submit arguments dealing with the details of my case. These hearings can be a bit dry and overwhelmingly sleep inducing and I’m glad it’s over. This Thursday July 7th, the Judge will make her decision on some or all of Tim’s submissions. So when we hear the word we will pass on whatever news we have and what that means for my future.

Bad Climate

Mark Hertsgaard copyright 2005 (used by permission of Agence Global)- The July 6-8 summit meeting of the Group of Eight industrial nations comes as humanity is drifting toward unparalleled catastrophe. Climate change, a prime focus of the summit, is on track to kill millions of people in the twenty-first century. The victims will die not in the sudden bang of radioactive explosions but in the gradual whimper of environmental collapse as soaring temperatures and rising seas submerge cities, parch farmlands, crash ecosystems and spread hunger, disease and chaos worldwide.

Cancer: The Price of Progress

PEJ News
- F.H. Knelman, Ph.D.: The above is the title of a book I began writing some fifty years ago. My thesis was that the majority of cancers had environmental causes. These were mostly exposure to carcinogens in the workplace and in the general environment, the latter by far the waste products of industrial operations. According to the World Health Organization, some 80% of all cancer is environmentally-induced and is therefore preventable.

Polluting the English Language to Justify Slaughter

6/14/2005

Commentary by Paul Watson, Sea Shepherd Conservation Society

For years I have been annoyed at some of the terminology used in conservation and environmental circles. I think we should consciously try to think about changing the words we use. We need to put an end to the utilitarian, consumeristic jargon that is employed to justify ecological exploitation and the infliction of cruelty on nonhuman species.

Let’s start with the Canadian seal hunt. This is not really a hunt when you think about it. No one is tracking, stalking, or pursuing seals. The sealers merely walk through a nursery of defenseless seal pups and whack them on the head. The little fellas can’t escape, they can’t swim, and they can’t defend themselves. Let’s call it what it is – a slaughter or a massacre. I like to call it the Canadian National Obscenity.
