Afghanistan: Media Fiddles While Canadians Come Under Fire

PEJ News
- C. L. Cook - The "muscular" new Canadian approach to fulfilling the foreign policy objectives of the Bush administration today again bore bitter fruit for Canadian soldiers serving in Afghanistan. Dismissing the damage to troops and their Light Armoured Vehicle (LAV) as "minor," the national broadcaster missed entirely the damage being done to Canada's international image.

New Vancouver Council Withdraws Support for World Peace Forum

Ceasefire.ca
- I am sending this special appeal to you and all of our Ceasefire.ca supporters in British Columbia. Last night I received this urgent message from the organizers of the World Peace Forum which will be held in Vancouver this June. You will be just as appalled as I was to learn that the new Vancouver City Council has withdrawn its support for an international meeting of peace mayors. Now the whole event has been put in doubt!

Election Promise to Ban Space-Based Weapons

PEJ News
- As a surprise inclusion in the Liberal party platform released today, there is a pledge to lead an international campaign at the UN to establish a treaty banning all weapons is space.

This is surely an attempt to differentiate the Liberals from the Conservative Party which has taken the lead in the past two days of campaigning, as we come down to the January 23rd federal election.  The NDP and the Liberals are now clearly lined up on one side, firmly opposed to space militarization, with the Conservative Party characterized as on the other side with their Bush-friendly, Americanization of Canadian policy.

International and other issues  ignored in the 2006 Canadian election

PEJ News - Joan Russow - Serious concerns have been arisen during thie Canadian election about the Americanization of Canadian policy. Of particular concern is the association of political parties with US contribution to global insecurity and with the intrusion of fundamentalism in Canadian politics. While the internet is ablaze with concerns about the possibility of the US invading Iran, the Canadian election is oblivious to the fact that a Conservative government could drag Canada closer to the US and years of potential conflicts.

Harpers policy: Value for money and the military free

Global Compliance Research Project - Joan Russow - On January 3, Steven Harper reiterated a long time slogan ?value for money?. For Harper value for money entails substantial increases in military spending. Currently the Canadian military budget is more than 10% of federal government expenses after the payment of interest on the debt.

Paul Martin - Silence is appeasement

December 18/05 -- Bill Henderson

In the midst of our present winter election, Canada's Prime Minister, Paul Martin is being undeservingly aided by Bush Administration. The American ambassador's attempts to muzzle Martin's comments about the US and Kyoto (and also about US trade policies) were a great boost for the encumbent Martin. The ambassador, who criticized Martin on Bush's behalf, would have been more effective from a Bush point of view if he would have given Mr. Martin a great big sloppy kiss.

Canadian Haiti Action Network

We are united by a determination to raise awareness of what is actually happening in Haiti, and the real effects of the Government of Canada's support for the February 29, 2004 coup d'etat that overthrew Haiti's democratically-elected government. We support the list of principles outlined at the international Kongres Bwa Kayiman (KBK) conference of February, 2005, in which Haiti solidarity activists from various countries reiterated their support for Haitian democracy.

See final resolution from KBK at http://www.fondasyonmapou.org/memberspage.html

This website is a collaborative project of the Canada Haiti Action Network, a grassroots group of solidarity activists based in most provinces across Canada. For those who are concerned about Canada's role in Haiti this appears to be an excellent resource.  www.canadahaitiaction.ca

New Berets for the Canadian Army: from UN Blue to US Green PDF Print E-mail
Peace News
Wednesday, 14 September 2005 05:13
According to a press release from the Canadian Department of National Defense, the Canadian Armed Forces are to be reeorganized into two new units. Most of the forces will be reorganized into CEFCOM, a force designed to intervene abroad "to allow the Canadian forces to specifically meet and manage threats to Canadian security as far away from our borders as possible." A smaller "Special Operations Group", modelled on the U.S. Special Forces, will now evolve "from a force of last resort to a force of choice - especially in the ongoing Campaign Against Terrorism". Nowhere in the press release can one find the word "peacekeeping".

Canada's Brave Talk

Dear Editor, Toronto Star - Fred Brailey - Monday, August 08, 2005 2:45 PM - Gung ho for killing, Canada's top generals are quoted daily in the media. "Afghan mission to last 20 years." Toronto Star, front page, Aug.8. And a new ,more belligerent PM Martin backs his Generals. A scintilla of thought would give pause for serious reservations, if Maj.-Gen. Andrew Leslie is serious in saying: "Every time you kill an angry young man overseas, you're creating 15 more who will come after you." With those odds, Maj.-Gen. Leslie's 20 year plan seems doomed from the start. Where is all this war talk taking us?

Is militarism the only option? What has happened to Canada's humanitarian spirit for the prevention of terrorism and war? Have we completely abandoned the ways of peace? Where is our generous support for indigenous progressive people? When will our trade teams study what the Afghan/Iraqi people want? Here is a great opportunity to promote micro-loans for family businesses, agricultural teams assisting in local production of better food and forage crops to replace opium poppies, medical teams building health clinics and public health infrastructure.

Are we writing all of those those people off as "scumbags'?
- Fred Brailey, Orangeville, ON
