Press Release

VICTORIA - Six-time Olympian and Bell Let’s Talk Representative Clara Hughes is currently biking across Canada on a 12,000 kilometre ride in 110 days with 95 community stops. She will be here in Victoria on Thursday, May 15, 2014 for two events hosted by the Bipolar Disorder Society of BC (BDSBC) – Bipolar Babe Project.

Day event at the Legislature – Ribbon Cutting Welcome to Victoria: The Olympic Champion will be met with a ribbon-cutting celebration event at the legislature buildings from 2:00pm - 4pm with guest speakers ranging from the Honourable Judith Guichon- Lieutenant Governor, MLA Michelle Stilwell, Jamie Van Gessel – a 17 year old living and thriving with bipolar disorder and Julia Wilkes, the lead facilitator for the Bipolar Babe Women’s Group.  Local mental health non-profit organizations will be showcased throughout the event via informational booths and will be sharing their important information with the public.

Evening Event at the Victoria Public Market – Hats off to Clara Hughes: Evening Wine Tasting and Small Bites Celebration: The BDSBC has arranged a meet-and-greet with Hughes herself at the semi-casual wine-tasting event at the downtown Victoria’s Public Market in the Hudson building starting at 7:30 pm.  CTV’s Bruce Williams will be the MC with samplings from 8 peninsula wineries, appetizers from the Market vendors, a live auction, musical performances by Stephanie Greaves throughout the event and a youth musical duo named Sarah and Laura will finalize the evening.

While the challenges facing people coping with mental illness remain a reality, both Paquette and Van Gessel feel overwhelmingly optimistic about the future of mental health and the opportunities for positive change.  Says Paquette, “I think we are in the midst of a great movement—people are talking a lot more, we have a lot more conversations free of stigma, and people like Clara are opening up these conversations more and more every day.”

Being that this is such a pinnacle moment in both Canadian and Mental Health history we know the public’s presence would be of the utmost importance and speak volumes for their support for the mental health community.
