Nuclear-Free Victoria Harbour Is Urgent Issue Says Gregory Hartnell

Gregory Hartnell -
Victoria's Harbour and airspace should be nuclear-free, safe, quiet and colourful, says Gregory Hartnell, President of the Concerned Citizens' Coalition (CCC), and a candidate with Patrick Jamieson and Father Allen Jones for the CCC in the up-coming Victoria Civic Election.

A former member with Al Rycroft, Kealey Pringle, Joan Russow, the late Anne Pask Wilkinson, Merve Wilkinson, Robert Moore-Stewart, the late Professor Fred Knelman and other pacifists for many years in the Vancouver Island Peace Society which attempted to force the federal government to undertake a public open review process to assess dangers to the public of these nuclear-powered and nuclear-armed foreign naval vessels into Victoria and Esquimalt Harbours, Mr. Hartnell is the author of the CCC's new 10 point 'Victoria Recovery Plan 2008'. Point No. 5 of the new Recovery Plan addresses the nuclear-free ports issue.

Here is the full text of Point No. 5 of the Concerned Citizens' Coalition's new 10 point 'Victoria Recovery Plan 2008' which is found at the Concerned Citizens' Coalition Weblog ('CCC BLOG') here:

It is accompanied by an interesting gallery of scans of transcultural peace propaganda and posters reproduced from back numbers of LA ROSA, which Mr. Hartnell has been editing since 1988 in a 'quirky and sporadic' manner, as Victoria artist and critic Robert Amos once put it.

VICTORIA RECOVERY PLAN 2008
POINT No. 5

"QUIET, SAFE, NUCLEAR-FREE AND COLOURFUL HARBOUR AND NEIGHBOURHOOD AIRSPACE

To enhance public safety, ban visits of nuclear-powered and nuclear-armed vessels (such as USS Abraham Lincoln), helicopters, supersonic jets (including Snowbirds) and seaplanes from within 3 km. of Victoria Harbour.

City of Victoria should take over legal and de facto control of the Victoria Harbour from the non-accountable Victoria Harbour Authority.

City of Victoria should reduce business license fees charged to artists and buskers."
