Just got my 2008 BC budget consultation information in the mail today. Deadline for submission is October 19th. Almost all the consultation meetings have happened in the province already - can you say 'conspiracy?  Please can you remind people to go to the website below and have their say on the BC budget before October 19th. It's all about how to reduce greenhouse gases this year. I wonder if we're allowed to mention the increase that Gateway will cause?

On October 4, 2007 CODEPINK: Women for Peace cofounder Medea Benjamin and Retired Colonel/diplomat Ann Wright were denied entry to Canada because they have engaged in acts of non-violent civil disobedience against the war in Iraq. The Canadian border officials said the women's names appeared on an FBI criminal database and that anyone convicted of a criminal offense, including a minor misdemeanor for peace and social justice, was "inadmissible."  We call on the FBI to stop including minor non-violent offenses on a database meant for serious crimes. We call on the Canadian government to reverse its policy and extend a warm welcome to U.S. peacemakers and other social activists who use the time-honored tradition of engaging in civil disobedience as a way to change unjust policies.

1.  Left Coast Annual Fundraiser - Oct 07

Do you read this list?  Is it useful for you?

I hope so - it's a bit of work!

It's free, the Left Coast Events list, but unfortunately not everything is.  People ask me for money in exchange for rent and food.  If you're also challenged to find money for those things too, maybe you can endorse my request for fund raising through http://www.givemeaning.com/proposal/Newz.

If you happen to have an extra $10 or $20 you can spare, and you think this list is worth it ....

Whatever you'd like to share would be really helpful to me - it takes about a day to sort and compile and format this list.  It's work I love to do and, even though I don't get to a lot of the events, it's comforting to know I'm helping people find places to be involved for progressive change.

Events lists for Victoria and Vancouver are online at http://relativenewz.ca.

My mailing address is #407, 1939 Lee Avenue, Victoria BC, V8R 4W9, or you can donate online at http://www.givemeaning.com/proposal/Newz after November 9th.

Thanks, and Namaste,
Janine Bandcroft

2.  Fish needs a place to live!  can you help?

Yes, I need a place to live!  My needs may sound pretty vague at this point, but it's because I am not totally sure where I should be moving at this stage in my life, and so I am letting the universe help me decide by sending me a sign.  PLEASE FORWARD this to anyone you know that could help, particularly those with an existing household with a room for rent.

-----

My name is Fish and I am a self-employed computer consultant (and electronic musician), working over the Internet, which means that in theory I can work from anywhere in the world.  Though the reality is, I am only considering four locations right now (I am currently on Commercial Drive but considering taking a break from Vancouver for a while):

- Vancouver (preferably Commercial Drive or Main Street areas)
- Victoria (Fernwood would be awesome, but open to other suggestions)
- Sunshine Coast
- various Gulf Islands

I am trying to find a one bedroom suite for either Nov 1 or Dec 1, preferably for no more than $700 per month (and cheaper is better), OR a room in some kind of shared accomodation with cool people.  Internet hookup (or potential to get one) would be ideal, but not totally necessary if there is a friendly web cafe in the area that I could work from.

I have extensive experience in communal living situations and am generally considered to be a good roommate.  I play electronic music as a sideline but have rented studio space so I do not practice at home at this point in time (though a place with built-in studio space would be ideal and I would pay extra for this!)

I would like a space that is electronic music friendly, at least some of the time (because that's what I like to listen to when I'm cooking or doing dishes ) and if it was pet friendly that would be nice, though not essential (I would like to get a cat again sometime, but if the place already has a cat that I could bond with, that would be good too!)  I am not a tobacco smoker and would prefer to live with others who aren't.  Moderate levels of alcohol use won't offend me in any way, but a place that is a full-on constant party pad is NOT what I'm looking for.

Much more information about me is available on request, or during the roommate interview.

Please let me know at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or 778-896-2297 about any leads you may have for me!

peace and thanks,
Fish

4.  Community Economic Development - Certificate Program - Nov, Jan

Community Economic Development is when communities take their economic future into their own hands, ensuring the benefits of economic development strategies are maximized for locals and in such a way that social conditions and the environment are improved.  The goal of CED is to relocalize and democratize the economy. CED strategies have multiple bottom lines and range from peer lending groups to organic food production and distribution, to co-operative development, neighbourhood renewal and much more.   Now, you can learn how to do CED in Victoria!

The Centre for Sustainable Community Development at Simon Fraser University and the Canadian CED Network (CCEDNet) are very pleased to announce our new partnership for the delivery of the non-credit SFU Certificate Program for CED Professionals.

Please click on http://www.sfu.ca/cscd/ced/announcements.htm for more details.
