Agent provocateurs from WTO Seattle to SPP Montebello

PEJ News - Joan Russow. I attended the protests in Seattle In 1999, and I wrote the following, in 1999 about Agent provocateurs in Seattle:

On Wednesday, December 1, the day after the major protest and march, and the day for Clinton’s arrival, there were increased security measures including the placement of the downtown area under a curfew.

"I had an interview with the RAI [Italian] television station at the Sheraton hotel which was in the area under strict security. At first, I was not going to be allowed into the area. I explained that I had a television interview at the Sheraton and I showed the card from the RAI Television Station with a room number on it from the Sheraton. It was incredibly tense. I was called on my cell phone by Malcolm Curtis from the Times Colonist and described the situation down town. At one point, I was standing outside the Sheraton and I saw a group of men dressed in black looking like “typical protesters” and I wondered how they had been able to get in the area near the Sheraton where many of the delegates to the WTO were staying. With Clinton there, the police and the military had little tolerance for any of the protesters in the area in front of the Sheraton. As I looked up every street that was lined with military, police guards, and vehicles, I said to the supposed protesters. "I don't think that there is enough of a military presence here, perhaps they should call in the Canadian military." I was astounded by their response when they laughed and said as though the Canadian military could help. This was not a response that I would expect from protesters; I thought at the time that they were military agent provocateurs who could not resist defending the power of the US Military. "

Now in 2007,  at the SPP Summit in Montebello, it was reported in the CBC:

"Quebec provincial police admitted Thursday that three of their officers disguised themselves as demonstrators during the protest at the North American leaders summit in Montebello, Que.Quebec provincial police admitted Thursday that three of their officers disguised themselves as demonstrators during the protest at the North American leaders summit in Montebello, Que"
