We are a group of Jews in Britain from diverse backgrounds, occupations and affiliations who have in common a strong commitment tosocial justice and universal human rights. We come together in thebelief that the broad spectrum of opinion among the Jewish populationof this country is not reflected by those institutions which claimauthority to represent the Jewish community as a whole. We furtherbelieve that individuals and groups within all communities should feelfree to express their views on any issue of public concern withoutincurring accusations of disloyalty.

The problem, Benny Morris, is Zionism, By Yakov M. Rabkin
Benny Morris is an honest man. He was one of the first to exposethe history of Zionist dispossession and expulsion of thePalestinians. He later honestly regretted that the ethnic cleansinghad not been radical enough: The United States had done a better jobin cleansing the country of its previous inhabitants.

Below are two videos about something that may or may not haveconcerned you.
The first video addresses "scientific research" asan excuse for what in truth is commercial whaling by Japan, which kills 1,500-2,000 whales of at least six species (Minke, Fin,Sperm, Sei, Bryde's and Humpback) every year. It features anAustralian journalist asking the Japanese ambassador whether theAustralians could kill a few Japanese people in order to understandthe Japanese people better. I challenge you to not laugh outloud when you see it.

I just got off the phone with our colleagues at Mines ActionCanada, and I could hardly believe my ears. They told me thatour government cannot decide whether to support an international banon those terrible weapons: cluster bombs. Doesn't our Prime Minister,Stephen Harper, know that 98% of the victims of cluster bombs areinnocent civilians? And that one third of those victims are children?Canada led the world in banning landmines, and Canada should nothesitate to rid the world of these indiscriminate weapons too. Pleasego to http://Ceasefire.ca, right now, and add your name to a letter toStephen Harper urging him to add Canada's name to the list of 30 othercountries that have already decided to work toward a ban on clusterbombs.

editor's note -- these are good folk,i'll be visiting in early march and returning with photos and audiofrom their tree sit - surviving its third winter.
For all the new folks, here's the idea...if just 100 people, outof the billions of people on this Earth, could commit to donating just$10 per month to North Coast Earth First!, our campaign would berockin'! We are currently on the severe shoestring budget, and barelyhave enough to cover the basic costs of operations. With even 50people participating, at least our basic monthly expenses (officerent, pagers, phones, storage, etc.) would be covered. With 100people, though, we would have enough of an excess to be able to throwbenefits, order t-shirts, and spend more of our time doing outreachand actions, rather than having to fundraise so much just to keep theboat afloat. I've tried to come up with a realistic way for a lot ofpeople, near and far, to take part in the campaign to save some of thelast Old Growth Redwoods and Douglas Fir trees left on Earth, soplease help if you can. I know that times are tough for almosteveryone, and the cost of living just keeps on rising; please helpNorth Coast Earth First! survive these very challenging times as well.Earth First!http://northcoastearthfirst.org

1. Singing English - Feb/Mar

A New Dawn Project of the Living Language Institute
A Joyful Way of Learning

Living Language Institute Foundation (LLI) of Vancouver, B.C.Canada is
committed to the support of children and parents learningthrough singing
and song games - well researched learning methodologies thatsupport our
common humanity and our love of learning together.

These sessions are for children who have been diagnosed withinthe Autistic
Spectrum or those with developmental delays, and for theirparents. We will
be playing song games that enable the children to participatesocially and
teaching parents how to use the songs and song games at home. The approach
provides a context for social behaviours to arise through theactions and
repetition of the song game structures. Singing experiences areinvaluable
to growing children. The songs chosen parallel thecadences of the spoken
word and provide a flow of acoustic chunks onto which the wordsare
eventually clarified. The games also involve activesensory-motor
integration activities embedded in the song movements. These movements have
been developed by Dr. Fleurette Sweeney and her colleagues basedon the work
of the late Dr. Jean Ayer. We hope you will participate in thisfamily
oriented program.

What is Singing English?
Engaging Families

We have found that the song games provide a good way for parentsand
children to interact with each other as well as for children tointeract
with other children. The songs are also provided on a CDwhich can be
played in the home to familiarize the child with themusic. Parents are
provided with song games they can use and play at home.

Sound to Symbol
Methodology

The use of the Singing English methodology arises from the workof the
Living Language Institute, a non-profit foundation in Vancouver,B.C.
Canada. It consists of volunteer professionals dedicated tounderstanding,
researching and teaching the living language as exemplifiedthrough Singing
English. Singing English uses the Sound to Symbol Methodology, developed
over the past 30 years. It is an important method fordeveloping oral
language skills in the context of social play and for practicingimportant
sensory motor integration activities that arise in the context ofthe game
play.

The Singing English methodology is deceptively simple. It restson the
knowledge that the music of certain songs flow in confluence withspoken
English. By learning songs such as "The More we GetTogether" and "Circle
Left, Duo Duo", the children are given an acoustic 'mantra'which, when
accompanied by the social play of the folk song-game, establishesan
architecture of oral English and a social structure forcontextualizing the
meaning of the words.
Repeating the songs and games over time, while at the same timere-directing
the auditory focus of the players and diversifying the focus ofthe games,
provides the oral language structure for children for moving fromsound to
symbol, both iconic and written. Singing uses a different brainfunction and
children with language delays often find singing enjoyable.

The songs are structured for cooperative social interaction andare based on
simple movements and gestures that engage attention and provideboth
sequencing and patterns of social interaction carried by thesong's
architecture. Many of the song actions were developed based onthe work of
the late Dr. Jean Ayers, an occupational therapist who pioneeredactivities
for children in sensory motor integration.

The song and games together establish a context for conveying themeaning of
the words. It is the repetition over time, while at the sametime
re-directing the auditory focus of the participants anddiversifying the
focus of the games that establishes the language and socialstructures for
children. It is an approach which is playful and enjoyed byparents and
children alike.

Dr. Fleurette Sweeney

Dr. Sweeney and her colleagues developed the Sound to SymbolMethodology
over the past 30 years. The method is based on the power ofsinging and the
sensory motor coordinations that occur through song games. Dr. Sweeney
regualrly conducts workshops for teachers in thismethodology.
