Statement by Palestine Community Centre in British Columbia ? Canada:

RE: the Israeli Massacres against the Palestinians, U.S. Veto and the Arab League Facade

Nov. 19, 2006

Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada.

The Palestine Community Centre (PCC) strongly condemns the Israeli massacre of Palestinian civilians in Beit-Hanoon, Gaza, Occupied Palestine. This latest murder of families sleeping in their homes, including women and children, in the early morning of Wednesday November 8th adds to the long history of ethnic-cleansing committed against the Palestinians for almost sixty years.

We also denounce the latest U.S. veto at the U.N. Security Council, which was an attempt to shield Israel from accountability for its war crimes in Beit-Hanoon. We also condemn the Arab league?s conflicting actions and resolutions that express the sad reality of the Arab governments; supporting the siege by their complicity and silence then calling for lifting the siege after the inevitable massacres took place.

Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza are living under the longest occupation in modern history; two-thirds of the Palestinian population are refugees, and indigenous Palestinian Arabs in Israel are living under increasingly racist conditions. Palestinians are suffering under a much more advanced, and much worse, form of Apartheid, which far exceeds the policies and actions of Apartheid South Africa.

Israel planned and executed all these crimes under the watchful eyes of the International community, in full defiance of International and Humanitarian Laws, embedded in the charter of the United Nations and the Geneva Convention. The U.S.-controlled United Nations is allowing one country, Israel, to be above International Law, as evidenced by the latest vote of the Security Council where the U.S. vetoed an already diluted resolution condemning the latest massacre in Gaza.

What is equally disturbing to us is the official stand of the Canadian government. The Harper Government was the first to approve the policy of mass starvation against the Palestinians, despite clear and strong public opposition from the majority of the Canadian people. We reiterate our belief that silence on these massacres and gross violations of human rights is by itself a crime. Complicity and turning a blind eye to Israel?s actions are precisely what provide the Israeli government the cover it needs to conduct and intensify its campaign against the Palestinian civilian population.

The Palestine Community Centre demands an immediate end to the Canadian government?s support for Israeli apartheid, and to end its continued sanctioning of Israeli war crimes against the Palestinian and Lebanese people. We call upon the Canadian Government and all Canadian MPs to move to sever diplomatic relations with Israel until it halts its campaign of destruction and ethnic-cleansing against the Palestinian and Arab peoples.

We will continue supporting the general boycotts against Israel until it abides by International and Humanitarian laws.

We also call on the Arab people to hold their governments accountable for their complicity in the U.S. and Israeli war crimes against the Arab people of Lebanon, Iraq and Palestine. If these governments are at all serious about supporting the Palestinian people, they would have boycotted the U.S. economically, militarily and culturally, in a similar way that the U.S. boycotts other nations for far lesser reasons.
