Aid, Aide, and AIDS: Morons, Imbeciles, and Idiots

PEJ News - C. L. Cook - Stephen Harper's miniscule minority government seems to feel Canadian's sensibilities as dense as the denizens of his exemplars in the United States. Effectively disappearing himself to the far north this past week while the world's biggest AIDS conference convened in Toronto may have scored points with the "dinosaurs walked with Man crowd," but it only points up just how out of sync Harper is with the "folks" he purports to represent.

Aid, Aide, and AIDS:
Morons, Imbeciles, and Idiots

As he would merrily march Canada's youth to distant wars, guaranteeing death and despair here at home, the leader of the reconstituted Conservative Party of Canada would too blithely ignore the plight of the thousands of citizens suffering HIV and AIDS, and the many millions more dying abroad. By ditching out on the sixteenth annual AIDS conference, held a mere few hundred miles from his new home in Ottawa, Harper has placed his party's position firmly with the philosophy of his spiritual mentor, George W. Bush, despite a dearth of politically motivated evangelical Christians standing behind him.

Not content with snubbing the international delegates gathered in TO this week, including the planet's highest profile, (coincidentally Canadian) AIDS activist, Stephen Lewis, Harper would too position his government four square against furthering federal funding to urban safe injection sites, most especially in HIV ground zero Vancouver. Though doubtless yet to ken the depth of their PR ineptitude, Team Harper is bound to spend the next couple weeks of the silly season deflecting pointed criticism of the leader's sins of omission.

Sadly, these observations of the Tory's lack of moral fibre are more fundamental than just its willingness to abandon the millions afflicted with HIV/AIDS; if it were only that. Harper and his minions represent the grossest, most vile meanness ever manifest on the Canadian political scene. Coupled with Harper's and his party's disregard for those suffering the modern plague, their neglect of the social conditions contributing to the spread of the pandemic rates this administration on a par with South Africa, and its monumentally wrong-headed approach to the welfare of its own populace.

But, if that were all wrong here.

Harper, speaking for Canada, was foremost in condemning the democratically elected government of Hamas in Palestine. Before even the United States, Harper announced the cessation of Canadian aid to the Palestinian survivors of Israeli ministrations, even as those less than tender attentions reached unprecedented atrocity, proving the seed of Hezbollah's attack against an incursion of Israeli soldiers into south Lebanon preceding the "war" there. Now he is promising millions in aid moneys dedicated to "reputable NGO's." The message here being his party's willingness to wash their hands of the blatantly illegal invasion and destruction of Lebanon;  just toss a few million to politically correct chartities and be done with it.

As Israeli war planes pummelled the people of Lebanon, in violation of all law and decency, killing among others Canadian citizens, Harper sat silent, but to beg the international community grant the terrorist IDF more time to fulfill its agenda. As United Nations peacekeepers, a Canadian among them, were callously murdered by rogue Israel, Harper stood quiet, saving instead his criticisms for the victims of the blitzkrieg.

But, there's more.

Tonight, there are plans afoot to push America's bellicose attacks against Iran further; plans to make of Persia what has been made of Palestine, Afghanistan, Iraq, and now Lebanon. Stephen Harper, proven disdainer of all human values, is pushing Canada towards a supporting role in the promised conflagration of yet another nation. He would have Canadians become the enablers of the destroyers of worlds.

Clearly, there is no limit to his and his party's bloodlust. By aiding and abetting the Bush administration's murderous spree throughout the Middle East and beyond, Stephen Harper, and by extension all Canadians paying taxes, are complicit in the crimes of the century currently unfolding.

Renown Canadian scientist and social commentator, David Suzuki recently described AIDS as a pandemic unlike any other seen in human history; unique because it contains no upward limit. While other plagues effectively burn themselves out, due to dying hosts and other, not fully understood factors, AIDS contains within its epidemiological fingerprint no parameters. Suzuki believes, if current trends persist, a scenario everything Stephen Harper and his ilk would foster, there may well be more than one billion human victims of this disease worldwide by mid-century.

The time is come for Canadians, and indeed all those who value human life, liberty, and dignity stand; stand now against those that would, in the name of base profit, or political perversion, allow millions to live and die in abject misery. The time is now for Canadians to once again prove themselves the kind of world citizens they would like to believe themselves to be: Time to stand on guard not just for "thee."
