Israel's Implicit Hollywood Blacklist

PEJ News - C. L. Cook - YNet News of Israel is reporting today of the release of a petition, signed by dozens of Hollywood's major and lesser luminaries (and one of the tennis playing Williams sisters) condemning the governing party of Palestine, and the Hezbollah of Lebanon for causing Israel's recent bombing rampage in Lebanon and the ongoing campaign wreaking carnage in Palestine. While there is no proof yet the signatories were coerced into autographing the petition, it's reminiscent of the ominous spectre of Joseph McCarthy's Hollywood witch hunts of the 1950's.

"Are you now, or have you ever been..."

YNet's Yitzhak Benhorin claims, in his piece titled, 'Hollywood Stars Blast Nasrallah' the petition is the pet project of the consul general of Israel's Las Angeles consulate, Ehud Danoch, and just the first step in the broader 'Stop Terror at Any Price' campaign.

The next stop on Danoch's crusade took him to the William Morris Talent Agency, one of Hollywood's most prestigious talent dealers, where he "briefed" the executives there on the situation in Lebanon. Doubtless, he coached them in not so many words on how and in which way their clients should make "their" sentiments known; at any price.

So what is the price of stardom? Or more humbly, what price is to be exacted for those just wanting to get and keep work in the already famously difficult 'Biz'? And what about those Ehud passed the petition to that didn't sign; is there a list in a drawer of the consul general's office desk containing those names? And will there be next a list of those that defy Ehud's brief suggestions and hire those who don't wish to toe his and Israel's political line?

And why stop in Hollywood?

Are you now, or have you ever been...

Curious, but as Rupert Murdoch's John Hancock figures prominently on Ehud's declaration, any self-respecting FOX news reader, loud-mouthed shout-show host, and all those eager for a continued career with America's #1 network must be chomping to put their two-bits worth in too. I can see those frantic career aspirants now, in conversation with their work mates at the water cooler:

"Whaddaya mean, you're not on the List! Well, er, I gotta go."

And I can see too, knowing that back stabbing business first-hand, how tidbits of information like a career rival's signature absent on the "right" documents can make all the difference to one's own prospects. And, that's how it begins; with Fear and loathsome, cunning ambition, the undermining of an entire society, none trusting the other, all warily watching each.

Beneath Murdock's name, YNet provides a partial list of the "Hollywood Stars" signing on to this next dark chapter of tinsel town history; included are: Sylvester Stallone, James Woods, Bruce Willis, director Ridley Scott, tennis player Serena Williams, Michael Douglas, Dennis Hopper, William Hurt, Josh Malina, Kelly Preston, Danny DeVito, Don Johnson, and Nicole Kidman.

Nicole Kidman! Nicole, you'd have been better off staying with Scientologists. As for the others, they all seem to be on the downward arc of their respective careers. Even young Serena ain't what she used to be. Maybe she's just thinking of the teevee commercials?

Worst of all though, according to Yitzhak Benhorin's account, is the inclusion of Adam Sandler's name. I could've got along fine without the rest of these rats, but Oi vey, et tu Adam?
