Victoria Hunger Striker Gets Bail Hearing Today

PEJ News - Janine Bandcroft - Today is day 36 of David Johnston's hunger strike.  David is in Wilkinson jail because he believes all people have a right to sleep outside, in public spaces.  He has been repeatedly imprisoned for his attempts, and has refused to eat each time.  This time his sentence is lengthy, and he is willing to die rather than surrender.

Lawyer Irene Faulkner has spoken with David, and arranged a bail request that he approves.  The request  goes before a judge today, August 9th, at 2 pm at the Victoria courthouse on Burdett Street, in the Criminal Chambers.

Friends of David, or supporters of the right to sleep, are asked to be in peaceful, non-violent attendance.

For several months Irene Faulkner's professional partner, Cathie Boies-Parker, has been preparing a legal challenge on behalf of last year's tent-city participants, addressing the Canadian Charter of Rights which states we all have the right to Life, Liberty, and Security of Person.  Not only is the government not providing security of person (have you tried to pay rent or buy a house in Victoria lately?), but it's punishing those who attempt to secure their own.  If you were involved with the 2005 tent city in Victoria, or know anyone who was, please contact Cathie at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots.
