The federal election has turned into a close race in Victoria. The NDP, it appears, is leading with the Liberal incumbent not too far behind. The  Conservatives are followed by the Greens but not too closely to the two front-runners. So at present the race is really between Dave Turner and David Anderson.

I am writing as an environmentalist to encourage you to take David Turner and the NDP "over the top." Hopefully when you?ve read the explanation that follows you will appreciate why I have chosen to support David. Generally, things have not been going well for Paul Martin?s Liberals. In their desperation they have turned to using scare tactics about Steven Harper?s Conservatives (the Alliance/Reform/PC coalition) ? and the fear mongering is working ? some folks are thinking of voting Liberal just to keep Harper's Conservatives out. We need to stop this misguided strategy dead in its tracks!

The truth is that a vote for the NDP in Victoria is a strategic vote to get rid of the Liberals, to keep the Conservatives out, and to do something positive for the environment, peace and justice.

Supporting this view, I offer you GreenPeace?s own, thoroughly researched, ?Report Card? on the environmental policy platforms of the 5 major federal parties:

         Conservatives    Bloc     Liberals    Greens    NDP
Energy          F             A            C             B          A
Food            F              B            F             A          A
Nature          F              B            F             B          A
Peace           F              A            F             A          A

I was both stunned and pleased to see that GreenPeace had recently rated the NDP?s environmental policies at better than those of the Green Party. (Note that the Liberals, even with David Anderson?s less-than-effective  ministerial efforts and promises factored in, still rated second to last, nearly as bad as the Conservatives.)

Confirming GreenPeace?s assessment of the federal parties? stances on environmental issues we can add the Sierra Club of Canada?s statements from today:
??the Conservatives were the only party to receive a failing grade.
The Liberals, New Democrats, Green and Bloc Quebecois all support the Kyoto Protocol.  The party positions put the NDP and the Bloc at the head of the class with the NDP earning an A+ and the Bloc getting an A, tying with the Green Party.  Paul Martin and the Liberal Party platform earned a B.?

David Anderson is running scared, and yesterday exclaimed in the Times Colonist that a vote for him was a vote for the Environment... and that a vote for the NDP was a vote for the Conservatives. Utter and desperate nonsense!

In General, voting either Liberal or Conservative will set cherished Canadian programs backwards... both parties have agendas that benefit Corporations at the expense of ordinary Canadian families and our marvellous environmental heritage.

That's why I'm encouraging others to vote NDP and urging you to do the same.

I'm asking Peace, Earth & Justice News readers to write some Letters to the Editor and make some calls to the radio and TV talk shows. Starting today.

It?s going to be a ?squeaker? between Turner and Anderson.

So this time, let?s rally all the votes that we can possibly muster for David Turner, Jack Layton, and the New Democratic Party.

"Greener than the Greens."

Thanks,
Danny Rubin
