Your Space & Technology Vote goes to the NDP

PEJ News - Only getting to cast one vote in the Canadian Federal Election in Victoria BC on January 23rd, 2006 my vote goes to Denise Savoie of the New Democratic Party.

What can the topics of complex mega-dollar industrial enterprise like satellite, space exploration, nanotechnology, and electronic privacy invasion have to do with the electoral choices of a voter with interest in Peace, Earth, and Social Justice?

-- Space & Technology Editor

If one moves past the Luddite,  and achieves some understanding that technological development and an increased understanding of our place in the cosmos is inherently valuable then it is important to look at the HOW and the WHY of development.

I want our government to support the development of and the use of technologies that:

- increase the quality of live for the poorest 2/3 of the planet
o the NDP will support achievement of our international development funding responsibilities of a minimum of 0.7% GDP

- use satellite and surveillance technologies for communication, disaster management, alleviation of human suffering, and monitoring of the Environment
o the NDP will oppose George Bush?s weapons in space plan

- invests in the technology and science of our health care system with the rewards of these endeavours being available to all
o the NDP will be responsive to rational drug patent laws

- support the growth of technologies the promote a sustainable environment
o the NDP will support our commitment to the Kyoto Agreement on Climate Change
o the NDP will support green energy initiatives
o the NDP will call into question ?terminator seed? and patented seed lines

As new technologies are embraced, I want our institutions of government to act not just in the interest of Corporate Profits; but apply a value system that deals with the multiple accounts of social benefit, quality of life, sustainable job creation, and harm reduction.

Tomorrow, election day 2006, I cast my vote for Denise Savoie, NDP.
