Jetting: rapid water provision for Darfur refugees

In large parts of Darfur and nearby Chad it is possible to very quickly install new water points using water jetting as a drilling method. This is the conclusion of field trials recently carried out by Medair. This simple, low-cost technique allows the rapid provision of clean drinking water to tens of thousands of internally displaced people (IDPs).

Jetting is easy to learn, and does not require expensive or complicated equipment. The viability in the current humanitarian emergency has already been proved by Medair through the installation of 7 wells in IDP camps in as many days. During the assignment, several Medair staff were trained in the technique and they are successfully continuing the construction of additional wells.
