Mount Newton is next on the list of Greater Victoria landmarks that First Nations want to see restored to their traditional names.

The Saanich, or Wsanec, tribes know the mountain as Lau,Welnew, which means place of refuge in the Sencoten language.

“There’s big support for that one in the Saanich Nation because we have always held that mountain sacred,” said Tsawout hereditary chief Eric Pelkey, who spearheaded last week’s march up Mount Douglas to erect a sign bearing the traditional name Pkols.

Rotarians Donate $80,000 to Downtown Community Centre Renovations

 

The media are invited to join members of the Rotary Club of Victoria for a pre-renovation tour of the Downtown Community Centre (755 Pandora) at 1:45 pm on Tuesday, May 28. Cheques totalling $80,000 will be presented to Cool Aid by the Rotarians, who are celebrating 100 years of service in Victoria this year, in part, through this lasting capital contribution to the community. A post-renovation tour will also be open to the media in the fall to report on the transformation of the public facility, which provides critical services to people who are homeless and vulnerable in the downtown core.
