Too Many Generals Spoil the Democracy

Trump’s Push to “Win” with Warriors is a Loss for America

By William J. Astore

America has always had a love affair with its generals. It started at the founding of the republic with George Washington and continued with (among others) Andrew Jackson, Zachary Taylor, Ulysses S. Grant, and Dwight D. Eisenhower.  These military men shared something in common: they were winning generals.  Washington in the Revolution; Jackson in the War of 1812; Taylor in the Mexican-American War; Grant in the Civil War; and Ike, of course, in World War II.  Americans have always loved a hero in uniform -- when he wins.

By Valerie Volcovici | WASHINGTOn  Reutershttp://www.reuters.com/article/usa-trump-tribes-idUSL1N1E00H0Native American reservations cover just 2 percent of the United States, but they may contain about a fifth of the nation's oil and gas, along with vast coal reserves.
Now, a group of advisors to President-elect Donald Trump on Native American issues wants to free those resources from what they call a suffocating federal bureaucracy that holds title to 56 million acres of tribal lands, two chairmen of the coalition told Reuters in exclusive interviewsThe group proposes to put those lands into private ownership - a politically explosive idea that could upend more than century of policy designed to preserve Indian tribes on U.S.-owned reservations, which are governed by tribal leaders as sovereign nations.

Nine Things Obama Could Do Before Leaving Office to Reveal the Nature of the National Security State By Pratap Chatterjee

In less than seven weeks, President Barack Obama will hand over the government to Donald Trump, including access to the White House, Air Force One, and Camp David. Trump will also, of course, inherit the infamous nuclear codes, as well as the latest in warfare technology, including the Central Intelligence Agency’s fleet of killer drones, the National Security Agency’s vast surveillance and data collection apparatus, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s enormous system of undercover informants.

Before the recent election, Obama repeatedly warned that a Trump victory could spell disaster. "If somebody starts tweeting at three in the morning because SNL [Saturday Night Live] made fun of you, you can’t handle the nuclear codes," Obama typically told a pro-Clinton rally in November. "Everything that we've done over the last eight years," he added in an interview with MSNBC, "will be reversed with a Trump presidency."

Trump says on twitter that millions of illegal votes happened and that dead people were voting.  Either he has been watching too many episodes of the walking dead, he doesn't know anything or he knows it is a fact because he engineered it.

He is also attacking the first amendment with the flag burning issue.  At present it is not illegal to burn a flag because of free speach.  He cannot take away someones citizenship.  That is a hint of what to expect in the future.  America is no longer the "Leader of the Free World".

Thist all sounds like the typical Trump big fat lies which he uses effectively to distract from other events going down that would effect his ability to become President...Conflicts of interest being the obvious one.  Shady appointments another.

As U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) urges the president-elect "to heed the views of progressives," protests continue in cities across the U.S. on Saturday, with participants driven by "outrage and fear" over Donald Trump's electoral victory.

Describing the continued demonstrations, the New York Times writes that "a national resistance among liberal activists and others who say they do not support his presidency is rising in response to the election in a way not seen in modern presidential history." They also, as Common Dreams reported, "continue amid a reported increase of abuse and assaults against Muslims, people of color, immigrants, women and girls, and the LGBTQ community, among other minorities."

"On Friday night," the Washington Post reports, "people marched in cities including New York, the District, Dallas, Miami, Orlando, Raleigh, and Portland—where, for a second night, demonstrations turned violent. More rallies were planned through the weekend in scattered cities."

Though they have been largely peaceful, one of the protesters in Portland who faced tear gas and flash-bang grenades was shot in the early hours on Saturday.
