Alternative Christmas without Coca Cola Santa

PEJ News
- Richard Walpole - An artist in Sooke on Vancouver Island recenty erected a cross with Santa Clause nailed to it. Santa soon disappeared, only to be found someplace else, but that did not matter. Comparing a mythological character created by a soft drink company to Jesus startled many people. And of course, the irony was not lost on anybody.

Canadian Whirlwind: One Week, Two Men

PEJ News
- Richard Walpole - You will not find Stephane Dion and Giuliano Zaccardelli mentioned in the same sentence very often, but such is the extraordinary week we have all lived through. One on his way in, one on his way out. But both are, to some extent, strangers to most Canadians. Both are involved in changing the Canadian landscape. Both have achieved the top of their professions, or near to it.

Don Cherry said yes to Equal Marriage

Hockey Icon, Don Cherry, Gives Thumbs up to Gay Marriage

PEJ News - Rick Barnes - If Don Cherry can say yes to two gay men or two lesbian women marrying each other then why the heck do we still have the likes of MP Art Hanger and Prime Minister Stephen Harper saying no. On December 17, 2004 I heard Don Cherry tell TSN he had no problem with "gay" marriage.

Harper, Conservatives, will ignore the real Canada

PEJ News - Richard Walpole - Prime Minister  Stephen Harper has revealed himself yet again as someone who does not think that government has a responsibility to all, and not just the usual suspects. Driven mad by both ideology and control-freakiness, he has for example, his people trying to figure out, how to stop the safe injection site in Vancouver despite the plethora of good reports. Ideology over realism.

Layton Slagged for Wanting Afghanistan Debate

PEJ News
- Richard Walpole - Boy, the NDP's Jack Layton certainly receives a ton of bile in letters to the editor whenever he says that we should pull our troops from Afghanistan or at least debate the issue in public and in Parliament.

Homelessness Part 1

PEJ News
- Richard Walpole's Blogpole - In 1941, having gone through The Great Depression, and knowing of the depravities of both Hitler and Stalin, US President Franklin Delano Roosevelt altruistically wrote up four principles he felt every human being had the right to claim. We may be a bit closer to achieving these principles today than we were 65 years ago, because we can understand the problems in our world a bit better, and defining a problem accurately sometimes leads to effective responses.

Ottawa, We Have A Problem

PEJ News - Blogpole - Richard Walpole - Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Parliamentary Press Gallery are having what looks like a children?s spat, but which is infinitely more serious. The PM wants a list of the PPG, so he can choose which reporters will ask him questions. Reporters say the PM will only ask friendly reporters for their soft questions, leaving Canadians ignorant of the true state of affairs.

Our prime minister comes from Alberta, where master media manipulator Ralph Klein has held sway for well over a decade. When Klein got a question he didn?t like, he never asked that reporter for a question again. He was able to carry off this censorship because of his personality: our PM is trying the same strategy without the personality backup.

If the Conservatives Are Scary, What Does That Make the Liberals

China e-Lobby
- Well, if Paul Martin's latest speech is any indication, the campaign message from Canada's ruling Liberal Party is clearly a return to the 2004, "Harper is scary" motif. Naturally, as this quarter has more than a passing interest in the vote, this inspired me to consider the flip-side of this question: how would another one-to-four years of Paul Martin as Prime Minister look?

Regarding Communist China, Prime Minister Martin has compiled quite the record on Communist China; perhaps if Canadians were fully aware of it, they might be quaking in their boots at the prospect of Martin winning, rather than Harper.
