A Second Snow Day for Victoria

PEJ News - C. L. Cook - Reminiscent of the Big Blizzard of '96, Victoria, the city so magnificently unprepared for snowfall then, is again shutting down. At this hour (7:15 am pst) bus service has been shut down, while forecasters are reporting more snow is on the way.

Proposed Transit Funding "Options" for Victoria

BC Transit - The Victoria Regional Transit Commission is reviewing fare and taxation options to improve transit service in the next three years. The Commission has invited residents to comment on these local funding options.

[Last year, a breakdown of BC Transit's costs was published in the local newspaper. What struck me at that time was; the single biggest expense for Transit apart from salaries was a 13% allocation, equal to fuel costs at that time, to service Transit's debt. I've not seen any remarks about this extraordinary and wasteful budget management. If the provincial government were to refinance this debt, how much more could the transit system do for the people of B.C. and our shared environment? - lex]

BP: Beyond Propaganda

Media Lens
- Of course the Independent is not alone in its corporate schizophrenia. Even the respected science weekly, the New Scientist, is trying to sew with a double-pointed needle. The March 25 issue featured four full-page advertisements for cars. The vehicles comprised three "gas guzzlers" (a 3.7-litre Mercedes, a 3-litre Subaru and a 4.2-litre supercharged Range Rover) and only one "green" car - the Toyota Prius.

Victoria Harbour should be non-nuclear

PEJ News - Gregory Hartnell - Full text of a letter to the editor of the Victoria Times Colonist daily newspaper, written August 8 by Gregory Hartnell, and printed two days later under the editor's headline 'N-ship visit no cause for celebration.' This is followed by a related letter printed in the same paper on August 16 by a Cowichan Bay writer who attempts to argue for the supposed advantages of nuclear power, and against 'those who thoughtlessly spew mindless cheap hippie "philosophy" at every opportunity.'

Gravel Pit at Muir Creek in Sooke

Muir Creek Protection Society - An application has been made for a gravel pit very close to Muir Creek [above on the east side near the ocean]. We feel it may lessen our chances for a park at Muir, and certainly the noise, dust and truck traffic will make the park less pleasant. The gravel pit will be clearly visable from the beach at Muir. The three years applied for, according to the Ministry of Mines, can easily be extended indefinately if the owner of the gravel pit wants.
