BP: Beyond Propaganda

Media Lens
- Of course the Independent is not alone in its corporate schizophrenia. Even the respected science weekly, the New Scientist, is trying to sew with a double-pointed needle. The March 25 issue featured four full-page advertisements for cars. The vehicles comprised three "gas guzzlers" (a 3.7-litre Mercedes, a 3-litre Subaru and a 4.2-litre supercharged Range Rover) and only one "green" car - the Toyota Prius.

Victoria Harbour should be non-nuclear

PEJ News - Gregory Hartnell - Full text of a letter to the editor of the Victoria Times Colonist daily newspaper, written August 8 by Gregory Hartnell, and printed two days later under the editor's headline 'N-ship visit no cause for celebration.' This is followed by a related letter printed in the same paper on August 16 by a Cowichan Bay writer who attempts to argue for the supposed advantages of nuclear power, and against 'those who thoughtlessly spew mindless cheap hippie "philosophy" at every opportunity.'

Gravel Pit at Muir Creek in Sooke PDF Print E-mail

Gravel Pit at Muir Creek in Sooke

Muir Creek Protection Society - An application has been made for a gravel pit very close to Muir Creek [above on the east side near the ocean]. We feel it may lessen our chances for a park at Muir, and certainly the noise, dust and truck traffic will make the park less pleasant. The gravel pit will be clearly visable from the beach at Muir. The three years applied for, according to the Ministry of Mines, can easily be extended indefinately if the owner of the gravel pit wants.

No More Bull! with the Mad Cowboy

VIVA tries to find that fine line between useful information and preaching a vegetarian diet. So, what is such a group to do when it's time to commemorate 25 years of both creating community for local vegetarians as well as being a source of eductional information of interest to vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike... an event should appeal to everyone from those who are minorly veg curious to stout veg*n activists.

Fisheries Act Attack: Watershed Sentinel E-lert

Is that a Lake or a Mine Tailings Pond?

Environment Canada and Department of Fisheries and Oceans are amending the regulation under the Fisheries Act which controls pollution from mines. Among other changes, they propose to designate a natural lake, Trout Pond, in Newfoundland as a Tailings Impoundment Area, so that the Fisheries Act no longer applies to pollution in that lake. The addition of Trout Pond to the MMER amendments could set a precedent for using new lakes as tailings dumps all across Canada
