Pentagon Prepares to Build Robot Army

A third of the ground vehicles and a third of deep-strike aircraft in the military are expected to become robotic by 2010... They don't care if the guy next to them has just been shot. Will they do a better job than humans? Yes.

Missile Counter-Attack by Lloyd Axworthy

Lloyd Axworthy:
Dear Condi-- I know it seems improbable to your divinely guided master in the White House that mere mortals might disagree with participating in a missile-defence system that has failed in its last three tests, even though the tests themselves were carefully rigged to show results. But, gosh, we folks above the 49th parallel are somewhat cautious types who can't quite see laying down billions of dollars in a three-dud poker game. As our erstwhile Prairie-born and bred (and therefore prudent) finance minister pointed out in presenting his recent budget, we've had eight years of balanced or surplus financial accounts. If we're going to spend money, Mr. Goodale added, it will be on day-care and health programs, and even on more foreign aid and improved defence.

Italy Outraged: Charge Freed Journo Shooting Deliberate

The United States military has pursued shoot to kill policies on independent journalists at least since the opening days of the Iraq war. Dozens have been killed- all regretable "accidents of war." As Bush Himself says: "It's a dangerous place." Now, they've been outed by a survivor. - {lex}

US Weapon aims for Maximum Pain

NewScientist: "The US military is funding development of a weapon that delivers a bout of excruciating pain from up to 2 kilometres away. Intended for use against rioters, it is meant to leave victims unharmed. But pain researchers are furious that work aimed at controlling pain has been used to develop a weapon. And they fear that the technology will be used for torture."

US must ask permission to launch over Canada

CP:  The top U.S. envoy to Canada ? Paul Cellucci ? said Thursday that Canada would be ?outside of the room? while the United States decided whether to fire at incoming missiles

Mr. Martin said Friday, however, that ?we would expect to be consulted. This is our airspace, we're a sovereign nation and you don't intrude on a sovereign nation's airspace without seeking permission.?

Now we need to set up the protocols that make this work. And what happens if we say, "NO, do not launch over our air space or we would consider it an act of war."  Just like running submarines and icebreakers through Canadian Arctic waters without our permission.  -- Space & Technology Editor

Canada Says No to Missile Defence

ceasefire: Wow -- what a surprise. We knew we were getting close to a "no to missile defence" decision from Paul Martin and we expected it to happen soon after the Liberal convention in two weeks. But this is a great early gift, it's in the news everywhere -- Prime Minister Paul Martin announced yesterday that Canada will not be joining George W. Bush's missile defence scheme.
